Diversified South African-based resources company Exxaro Resources Limited (Exxaro) is proud to have achieved a Top 10 placing in the 3rd annual EY Excellence in Integrated Reporting Awards announced today. The awards recognise companies that are emerging as leaders in this area as well as trends and best practice with regards to integrated reporting (IR).

IR's overall objective is to enable stakeholders to assess the ability of an organisation to create and sustain value over the short, medium and long term. It helps to determine whether the organisation has sufficiently identified the environmental, social, governance and economic issues that impact on its business and whether these have been appropriately incorporated into its strategy.

Since its first integrated report for the year ended 31 December 2012, Exxaro has focused on the material issues affecting the business. The development of the business philosophy in 2013 has created the opportunity to integrate the group's vision, mission, values, strategy, resource-to-market business model, risk appetite framework and stakeholder engagement with a societal context.

Exxaro's aim is to produce an integrated report that is succinct, readable and relevant to its stakeholders. Supplementary information and further disclosures required by regulation are published on the company's website. The integrated report does not only focus on providers of capital; as a mining company we engage with and report on our engagement with other stakeholders such as our own employees, beneficiary communities, suppliers, local government policy-makers, regulators and legislators.

In the last year, we have seen an exponential interest from stakeholders seeking information about sustainability issues and how these are being addressed within the business. Exxaro's sustainability capitals framework has set the tone for integrated reporting and an integrated, cross-functional sustainability approach across the organisation.

"Our recognition in the EY annual awards demonstrates to stakeholders that we are thinking in a manner that will address their concerns about our long-term business sustainability. Ultimately, we believe integrated reporting has the potential to encourage investment in South Africa due to its focus on core issues, the transparency of information and its forward looking approach. These awards are essential to highlight the business performance and excellent reporting that is being done by many South African companies which enables them to effectively communicate with their stakeholders," said Mzila Mthenjane, Exxaro's executive for strategy and corporate affairs.
