TVA's new director praises utility role

Alabama businessman James "Skip" Thompson, who was sworn into office Friday as TVA's newest director, praised the role of the federal utility in helping the seven state region TVA serves with electric power.

"Having grown up in Decatur in the shadow of the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant, I've always been impressed by the continued importance of TVA's mission of energy, environmental stewardship and economic development," Thompson said after he was sworn into office Friday in Huntsville.

Thompson, the president of Corporate Billing LLC, a subsidiary of the National Bank of Commerce in Birmingham, Ala., is one of four new directors appointed last year to the 9-member board that oversees TVA, America's biggest government utility.

Thompson's term will expire on May 18, 2021 and his first board meeting will be next month in Chattanooga.

Chrysler recalls Pacifica Minivans

After scores of owners filed safety complaints or shared concerns through social media, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said Friday that it was recalling nearly 154,000 Chrysler Pacifica minivans to fix an issue that has caused some to stall suddenly while being driven.

The company discovered that under rare conditions the minivan's engine control module could incorrectly assess the operating status, potentially causing the engine to stall. Drivers found that they had to shut the vehicles off and restart them to resume driving. Some reported experiencing stalls in intersections or on highways.

Fiat Chrysler said it was aware of a single accident that was possibly related to the problem, but no injuries. The company said most of the stalling had occurred when the vehicles were idling or while starting, turning or moving at slow speeds.

The recall covers gas-powered Pacificas from the 2017 model year, a majority of the 180,000 Pacificas sold since the model was introduced in 2016. Hybrid Pacificas are unaffected.

New Jersey wants online gambling

Federal lawmakers from both parties in New Jersey are asking the U.S. Justice Department to keep internet gambling legal.

In a letter Thursday, the lawmakers urged the department not to rescind its 2011 legal opinion that internet gambling is permissible. It was responding to a letter in November from Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham and Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein asking the Justice Department to change course and have Congress determine whether to permit online gambling.
