Registrations in August, a relatively light sales month, came to 801,745 vehicles, the consulting firm said on Tuesday. Its numbers are based on national data and estimates for some smaller markets.

The advance lifted the seasonally adjusted annualised rate (SAAR) of Western European sales by 6.8 percent from July levels to 14.46 million cars, LMC said.

Registrations rose 9.4 percent in France, 13.1 percent in Spain and 15.8 percent in Italy, according to data published in recent days. Greek sales jumped an estimated 34 percent.

By contrast, German car registrations rose a more modest 3.5 percent while British sales tumbled 6.4 percent.
