FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE) is sending more than 250 linemen, support personnel and contractor crews to the Daytona Beach area to assist Florida Power & Light with restoration efforts should Tropical Storm Erika cause wide-spread power outages in the state.

FirstEnergy utilities include:

  • Jersey Central Power & Light in New Jersey
  • Ohio Edison, The Illuminating Company and Toledo Edison in Ohio
  • Metropolitan Edison Company (Met-Ed), Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec), Pennsylvania Power (Penn Power), and West Penn Power in Pennsylvania
  • Mon Power in West Virginia
  • Potomac Edison in Maryland and West Virginia

The crews will be leaving for Florida this afternoon and evening and will assemble at a staging area in Daytona Beach.

Current forecasts call for Tropical Storm Erika to make landfall in Florida sometime Sunday evening or Monday morning.

FirstEnergy is a member of several electric industry organizations that have been established so utilities can provide mutual assistance to each other when severe weather causes damage to the electric system in localized areas. Mutual assistance allows utilities to pool their resources help restore power to customers faster.

In the past, FirstEnergy has won electric industry awards for providing similar mutual assistance to customers in various areas around the country.
