At the Zeebrugge LNG Terminal the number of LNG tanker-truck loading operations continues to rise. With a view to making sure it can keep responding to the growing level of demand Fluxys LNG will construct a second truck loading station.

Fluxys LNG has made a Final Investment Decision for the construction of a second truck loading station at its LNG Terminal in Zeebrugge. This will enable the company to keep waiting times at a minimum and bolster its position as a crossroads for LNG in Northwest Europe. According to the current planning the construction of the new facility is set to start in spring 2018 and to be commissioned before summer of the same year.

Success of small-scale LNG

The number of LNG truck loadings has been rising exponentially in Northwest Europe the past few years, spurred on by the EU's increasingly stringent regulations regarding emissions. In Zeebrugge, LNG trucks and trailers can be loaded with 40 to 50 m³ LNG since 2010. Over 5,000 loadings have already left Zeebrugge by road and by ferry, in order to supply remote industrial end consumers and to supply LNG as a fuel for ships and trucks in neighbouring countries.

LNG: environmentally sound

LNG is the most environmentally sound fuel for both shipping and long-haul trucking, making it the ideal alternative for heavy fuel oil and diesel. The emission of sulphur and particulate matter are minimised, while carbon dioxide emissions are reduced up to 21% and nitrogen dioxide emissions up to 90%.

European support

The project is receiving financial support from the European Commission through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), which subsidises projects that boost synergies between the transport and energy sectors with a view to achieving a low-carbon future and strengthening the internal European energy market. The grant is part of a pilot project to facilitate the supply of LNG to a new LNG-bunkering facility set to be constructed at the port of Gothenburg (Sweden).
