Media Release Boao Asia Forum: Building Global Opportunities with Asia Perth, Thursday, 23 March: Fortescue Metals Group (Fortescue) will return to the prestigious Boao Forum for Asia this week as a Diamond Sponsor for the ninth consecutive year.

The Forum, being held from March 23-26, 2017, will again be hosted on the island province of Hainan in China and will bring together world leaders, business leaders, economists, philanthropists and academics.

The theme of this year's Forum "Globalisation and Free Trade: The Asian Perspective" will provide an important opportunity for world leaders, and conference participants to discuss future trade prospects within the framework of policy objectives for China and the Asian region.

Fortescue's CEO Nev Power said, "Fortescue's longstanding relationships with our customers in China have allowed us to grow together, from our first commercial shipment in 2008 to total shipments now exceeding 800 million tonnes and supplying 17 per cent of China's seaborne iron ore."

"Australia's significant strategic partnership with China is built on the importance of trade and is a fundamental pillar in our relationships across the Asian region. As the One Belt, One Road initiative continues to grow, the openness and mutual understanding established by our bilateral trade relationships will be critical to its success," Mr Power said.

During Boao, Fortescue will bring together representatives from West Australian and Chinese universities to discuss engagement opportunities. A significant collaborative project to be announced at Boao will involve the University of Western Australia, Curtin University's WA School of Mines, as well as Lingnan College and Central South University from China.

"Iron ore plays a significant role in Australia's export trade and we are very proud to build on that through a joint project with world class universities to foster Australia-China relationships in academia. By bringing the brightest minds together we hope to build collaboration and innovation across the mining and resources sector in our region," Mr Power said.
