Media Release Fortescue donation to benefit Port Hedland seafarers Port Hedland, 19 July 2017: Fortescue Metals Group (Fortescue) has donated a stretcher to the Port Hedland Seafarers Centre as part of its continued commitment to the organisation, which provides pastoral care services and assistance to thousands of seafarers every month.

As a long-time supporter of the Seafarers Centre, Fortescue participates in the annual Christmas gift bag drive where food hampers and presents are presented to ship crews anchored in Port Hedland in the lead-up to Christmas.

In 2016, Fortescue also granted the Seafarers access to Herb Elliott Port for weekly public tours to assist with ongoing fundraising for the relocation of their operations centre.

Fortescue General Manager Port and Rail Fernando Pereira said the donation, which was initiated by the Port operations team, was a demonstration of Fortescue's community spirit and recognition of the invaluable service that the Seafarers Centre provides to Port Hedland.

"At Fortescue, the health and wellbeing of our people is paramount and this extends to the ongoing welfare of all crew that arrive at Herb Elliott Port. This donation of a stretcher will ensure the Centre is equipped with the necessary tools to safely assist seafarers," he said.

Seafarers Centre Operations Manager Chris Towsey said with around 66,000 seafarers visiting Port Hedland every year, there was a large transient population of around 1300 seafarers each day.

"We occasionally have medical cases where an evacuation may be necessary. This stretcher will be a great asset in assisting the safe transport of patients from ships both in port and at anchor," Mr Towsey said.
