PARIS--The French government is planning to carry out a series of consultations within the country's telecom sector as a step toward introducing measures in favor of investment and jobs in the industry, which has been hit by effects of a brutal price war.
The statement issued by the Industry Ministry comes as French telecom heavyweights struggle in the face of fierce competition following the entry in January of a fourth mobile-phone operator, Iliad SA's (>> ILIAD) Free Mobile.
On Tuesday, industry minister Arnaud Montebourg and high-technology minister Fleur Pellerin met with representatives of the four French telephone heavyweights, after two flagship companies, Bouygues SA (>> BOUYGUES) and Vivendi SA (>> VIVENDI), announced restructuring plans in their telecom units.
