Electrical infrastructure specialist Dunamis, a Fulcrum Group company, has delivered electricity infrastructure for the UK's largest battery storage facility, which has now successfully completed its first six months of operation.

Working with Statera Energy, a developer, owner and operator of flexible electricity generation infrastructure, Dunamis undertook the design, installation and commissioning of the 132/33kV substation that connects the Pelham battery storage project, located near Bishop's Stortford in Hertfordshire, to the electricity network.

Completed from design to commissioning in just 10 months, the facility has a peak output of 49.99MW and has the potential to provide enough power for over 13,000 UK homes at any moment in time.

The facility is operating under a two-year agreement with National Grid to provide grid-balancing services, with the ability to respond to second-by-second changes in the grid. It also stores power when generation exceeds demand and exports electricity when demand increases.

As part of the electricity infrastructure, Dunamis designed and delivered a 132kV electricity connection for UK Power Networks (UKPN), which owns and maintains the electricity network in London and the South East, and an adjacent 132/33kV substation for Statera Energy, and all associated structural, civil and electrical works.

Utilising its experience and expertise in the delivery of large-scale battery storage infrastructure, Dunamis was able to achieve accelerated time-scales, which included a six-month construction phase, through the use of its in-house design division and in-house construction teams via Fulcrum Group company Maintech Power. Maintech Power has also been awarded the ongoing electrical maintenance contract for the Pelham facility.

Dunamis also worked closely with the EPC contractor that supplied and connected the battery storage system, as part of a collaborative arrangement to ensure the complex project met client expectations and timescales.

Martin Harrison, Chief Executive of the Fulcrum Group, said: 'The successful completion of the UK's largest battery storage facility is testament to our technical expertise and ability to deliver against challenging timescales.'

'Dunamis is well-established in the high voltage sector and this challenging project was successfully delivered through the application of experience and expertise of the team.

Tom Vernon, MD and founder of Statera Energy said: 'We're delighted to have successfully completed this complex and innovative project with Dunamis. We will continue to engage with high quality contractors such as Dunamis for the build-out of our pipeline of storage and flexible generation projects in the UK.'
