GOLDEN VALLEY, MN--(Marketwired - Apr 2, 2014) - KARE 11 Director of Photography Jonathan Malat has been named the 2014 Ernie Crisp Television News Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association.

This is the third time Malat has won this top honor from the NPPA. He won the title first in 1998 and again in 2002.

KARE 11 reporter Boyd Huppert was awarded the 2014 NPPA Photojournalism Award for Reporting. Out of the eight years that the NPPA has hosted this award, Huppert has won seven times.

Malat and Huppert are frequent collaborators on the popular "Land of 10,000 Stories" series on KARE 11 as well as on other award winning stories.

"Not a week goes by that a pleased viewer does not mention a great story they watched on KARE 11," said President and General Manager John Remes. "And very often it is the work of Boyd and Jonathan. They have a special knack of striking the chord of our community."

"Both Jonathan and Boyd are powerful storytellers," said News Director Jane Helmke. "They bring the best photography and reporting to work every day."

Malat has been a photojournalist at KARE 11 for 18 years. His work has been featured in six national Edward R. Murrow Awards, more than 50 Emmys and 90 NPPA awards.

Huppert began his television career in 1984 and has worked at KARE 11 since 1996. He has 10 Edward R. Murrow awards for writing and reporting and won a national Emmy in 2007 for feature reporting.
