Garmin International, Inc., a subsidiary of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, announced victory today in the lawsuit brought by Silver State Intellectual Technologies, LLC, against Garmin. A jury sitting in the United States District Court for the District of Nevada found that Silver State’s patents were invalid. The decision is subject to appeal.

“Garmin and others pioneered the GPS navigation industry years before Silver State filed its patents. We’re pleased that the jury rejected Silver State’s insidious attempts to take credit for the hard work and innovative products of real companies,” said Andrew Etkind, Garmin’s vice president and general counsel. “It remains an unfortunate and serious problem that operating companies like Garmin are so often subject to meritless patent suits based on bogus patents owned by non-operating companies.”

Garmin was represented by a team led by Nicholas Groombridge and Jenny Wu of Paul Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP.

For more than 25 years, Garmin has pioneered new GPS navigation and wireless devices and applications that are designed for people who live an active lifestyle. Garmin serves five primary business units, including automotive, aviation, fitness, marine, and outdoor recreation.
