• Altea is the last town to be connected to the Alicante-Altea gas pipeline, in which the company has invested over 17 million euros. This infrastructure serves 235,000 households in 11 municipalities.
  • Gas Natural Cegas, GAS NATURAL FENOSA's distribution company in the Region of Valencia, has allocated 480 million euros in the last decade to bringing gas networks to new municipalities and users.

Earlier today, the President of the Regional Government of Valencia, Alberto Fabra, and the Chairman of GAS NATURAL FENOSA, Salvador Gabarró, symbolically opened the valve that will connect the town of Altea to the natural gas distribution network. The arrival of gas to Altea represents the conclusion of work on the Alicante-Altea gas pipeline, which supplies 11 municipalities in the Marina Baja region of Alicante.

Salvador Gabarró thanked the regional and local authorities for their collaboration, which ensured that the Marina Baja gasification project could be finished successfully, and highlighted the benefits this project will bring. "Natural gas will undoubtedly help improve quality of life for local residents, as well as industrial competitiveness and economic growth; not only in this area but throughout the Region of Valencia," he said.

The event held to commemorate the arrival of gas in Altea was also attended by the Regional Councillor for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Tourism and Employment, Máximo Buch, the Mayor of Altea, Miguel Ortiz, and the Managing Director of Regulated Businesses at the multinational power company, Antoni Peris, the Managing Director for Communication and the Chairman's Office, Jordi Garcia Tabernero, and the Director for the Levante Region, Alfredo Ingelmo.

The company will allocate close to 900,000 euros to the construction of a six-kilometre distribution network in Altea. The first users will be able to enjoy the economic and environmental benefits of this energy in the second quarter of this year.

Alicante-Altea Gas Pipeline: a boost to economic development

Gas Natural Cegas has invested over 17 million euros in the 65-kilometre Alicante-Altea gas pipeline, which is part of the Region of Valencia Gas Plan.

The pipeline provides an energy supply to over 235,000 households in 11 coastal municipalities of the Marina Baja region: Alacant, Sant Joan d'Alacant, Mutxamel, El Campello, La Vila Joiosa, Finestrat, Benidorm, L'Alfàs del Pi, La Nucía, Polop and Altea.

Construction of this gas pipeline means providing the region with basic infrastructure for its economic development, given that natural gas contributes to improving the competitiveness of its industry - highly focused on the tourism sector.

Investments in the province of Alicante

The investment ratio in the Alicante-Altea gas pipeline demonstrates the strategic importance assigned to the province by Gas Natural Cegas. Thanks to the expansion plan implemented by the distribution company, natural gas reached two of the most important cities in Alicante that still lacked access to this source of energy in 2014: Benidorm and Torrevieja.

At the close of last year, Alicante had a distribution network measuring almost 2,000 kilometres and close to 107,500 gas supply points. The company operates in 38 municipalities in the province, representing coverage for 74% of the population.

Growing presence in the Region of Valencia

Gas Natural Cegas has been operating in the region for more than 170 years, where it has almost 653,200 supply points in 195 municipalities and a distribution network of over 8,000 kilometres in length.

The company has invested approximately 480 million euros in the Region of Valencia over the last 10 years, making it one of the main priority markets.

Gas Natural Cegas plans to bring a supply to 72 new municipalities in the next three years, which will enable it to complete its plan to supply gas to all towns with over 1,500 homes

Natural gas: environmental and economic sustainability

Natural gas is the least environmentally harmful conventional energy, given that its characteristics contribute decisively to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and help improve air quality in urban areas by practically eliminating particulate emissions. Furthermore, natural gas is the most competitive energy from an economic point of view for both homes and businesses.
