GAS NATURAL FENOSA is commemorating the International Day for Biological Diversity (Sunday 22 May) with the publication of its Biodiversity Report 2015-2016. This document contains information on the company's main initiatives relating to conserving biodiversity, preserving ecosystems and protecting natural environments.

In 2015, GAS NATURAL FENOSA undertook a total of 49 projects under its biodiversity action plan in the countries where it operates and where its activity has a great impact on the environment. These projects included the reforestation of 240 hectares in various locations in Spain, Panama, Mexico and Colombia. Over the course of last year, the company allocated 3.8 million euros to the completion of studies, environmental tracking activities and projects related to the protection of biodiversity.

The company maintains a commitment to the environment and the conservation of nature and biodiversity, which is reflected in everything it does. The most significant projects carried out in Spain include the restoration of the Lignitos de Meirama open-cast mine, located in the municipality of Cerceda (La Coruña). This project led to the creation of a large 150 hm lake measuring 2.2 kilometres in length by 1 kilometre in width. This environmental restoration has created an area conducive to the development of biodiversity where GAS NATURAL FENOSA has planted over 450,000 trees on730 hectares of restored land with almost 840 listed plant and animal species in 2015, some of which are of important conservational value.

Environmental education and biodiversity conservation initiatives

Commitment to the environment is a central theme in GAS NATURAL FENOSA's Corporate Responsibility Policy. This has led the company to develop various initiatives relating to respect for the environment. Last year, more than 200 employees of the power company and their families took part in the Corporate Environmental Volunteering Programme organised by the company in partnership with the Global Nature Foundation to encourage a positive attitude to the conservation of natural environments near the workplaces of Madrid, Barcelona and A Coruña.
