Gas Natural Galicia, the distribution company for GAS NATURAL FENOSA in this region, will invest almost 1.3 million euros to provide a natural gas supply to the urban area of Melide (A Coruña). The company will construct a distribution network of over 20 kilometres, enabling 80% of homes and businesses in the area to enjoy the benefits offered by natural gas.

Natural gas will be supplied to Melide via a liquefied natural gas satellite plant (LNG), from where the distribution network will connect to the urban area of the municipality. The first stage of this gas infrastructure project, which will be launched during the first half of this year, will involve laying pipes along the main roads in the urban area and the A Madalena industrial estate. These pipes are scheduled for installation along Avenida de A Coruña, Calle de América, Calle de Lugo, Calle Toques y Friol, Calle Cantón San Roque, Calle Ronda de Pontevedra, Calle Emilia Pardo Bazán, Calle Galicia, Calle Codeseira, Calle Martín Freire, Calle Progreso, Calle Rosalía de Castro, Calle Curros Enríquez, Calle Antón Fraguas and Calle Amador Rodríguez.

Officials from the power company will explain the gas infrastructure project in Melide and provide information on the advantages to be gained from this energy at an event for local residents that is scheduled to take place at 20:00 on 11 February at the Casa de Cultura in Melide.

At present, natural gas has become an economical and easily available energy solution for households, businesses, the service sector and industry. It requires very little investment, offers high performance, and can provide very energy-efficient processes. Natural gas is a continuous energy supply that requires no storage space and produces no solid waste.

Natural gas expansion plan in Galicia

This gas infrastructure project in Melide forms part of the 2015-2020 Gas Expansion Plan in Galicia being developed by Gas Natural Galicia and is aimed at helping to improve quality of life for citizens and increase savings for households on their energy bills, as well as boost economic and industrial growth in the region by increasing the competitiveness of companies in Galicia.

The power company is set to invest 195 million euros in bringing natural gas to 44 new towns in Galicia, meaning that 82% of the Galician population will have access to natural gas in 2020. The natural gas expansion plan represents a milestone in the energy policy of the Regional Government of Galicia, which considers expanding gas supplies throughout the region as a priority for improving the quality of life of the people of Galicia and increasing the competitiveness of its businesses and industries.

Gas Natural operations in Galicia

Gas Natural Galicia - the GAS NATURAL FENOSA distribution company in this autonomous region - has a distribution network of over 3,180 kilometres and 11 liquefied natural gas plants. It also manages close to 248,000 supply points in the 69 municipalities of Galicia where it distributes natural gas. 67% of the population in Galicia currently has access to this energy.

The penetration rate (supply points divided by the total number of households present in the municipalities of Galicia with a natural gas supply) stands at 24.3%, thanks to the company's investment effort over the last 15 years. During this time it has invested 438 million euros in increasing and improving its natural gas distribution business.
