• The President of the Regional Government of La Rioja, the Mayor of Pradejón and the General Manager of Regulated Businesses of GAS NATURAL FENOSA attended the official event to celebrate the start of natural gas supply in the municipality.
  • The power company is investing one million euros in building a liquefied natural gas plant (LNG) and almost 8.4 kilometres of pipelines to meet demand in Pradejón over the coming years.

The President of the Regional Government of La Rioja, José Ignacio Ceniceros, the Mayor of Pradejón, Óscar León, and the General Manager of Regulated Businesses of GAS NATURAL FENOSA, Antoni Peris, attended the institutional valve opening event symbolising the start of natural gas supply in the municipality.

With the launch of this supply, Gas Natural Rioja is offering a competitive and sustainable energy alternative to the 1,500 homes in Pradejón and supporting the development of the industrial and agri-food sector, especially the local mushroom growing industry. Approximately 40 users in the town are already enjoying the service.

Development of the project

The subsidiary of GAS NATURAL FENOSA will invest approximately one million euros in its project in Pradejón, a town of over 4,000 inhabitants, where it will build a distribution network of close on 8.4 kilometres and a liquefied natural gas plant. This facility enables a gas supply to be offered in such major towns as Pradejón, Cervera and San Asensio, which are located at some distance from the existing gas pipeline network in La Rioja.

The LNG plant is located to the east of the urban centre, in an area called Las Codas, from where the gas pipeline network will connect to the municipality. 50% of the planned network has already been completed (the core sections that run through the town) and work will continue over the next two years to finish the project.

After entering the urban area along Carretera Este, a branch pipeline runs along Calle Calahorra, Calle Medio and Calle San Andrés; while another branch runs along Calle Mayor, Calle Paz, Calle Velasco, Calle Juana Cordón, Calle San Antonio, Calle Alta, Calle Cruces, Calle Sol and Travesía Sol. Another branch runs along Calle Aurora Prado, Calle Fuente, Calle Vadillos Huertas, Calle Frontón and Calle Piscinas. Connections also link Calle Vicente Lasheras, Calle Nicolasa Montoya and Calle Cantón, which are joined by a branch linking the industrial area of Las Codas (close to the plant).

New technology that makes it easier to reach more towns

The new technological developments based on LNG plants mean this service can now be offered in towns that could not be reached before because a major investment was needed to transport gas to them from other nearby towns. As well as in Pradejón, the LNG plant system will be used in such towns as Cervera del Río Alhama and San Asensio.

The LNG plant in Pradejón has a horizontal tank of 30 m and a regulating and metering station (RMS). Gas is stored in liquid form at 165 degrees below zero. This increases storage capacity by 600 times when compared with conventional gaseous state storage tanks.

This system enables all domestic and commercial users to receive a service, and demand from the town to be met for the next 20 years. In addition, the LNG plant includes the infrastructure necessary to hold another tank of the same capacity, which will be able to meet future demand increases from industrial activity.

Gas development plan in La Rioja 2015-2018

Gas Natural Rioja is implementing a natural gas development plan up to 2018, under which it aims to achieve 95% coverage in this region; in other words, for 95% of residents in La Rioja to have access to natural gas should they wish. Natural gas is currently available for 90% of the population. The addition of new towns to the network, the installation of LNG plants and the conversion to natural gas of propane gas networks will be the cornerstone activities for achieving this goal. There are currently 105,000 natural gas users in La Rioja.

A service was launched in Murillo de Río Leza in the first quarter of this year and Pradejón is the latest addition, thus raising the number of towns with a natural gas supply to 40. In the immediate future, all towns of over 1,000 inhabitants in La Rioja - as well as many other smaller towns - will have a natural gas supply. A gas supply will also reach all the main industrial estates and industries, for which this energy represents an important competitiveness factor.
