The first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) filling station for Dutch commercial vehicles in the north of the Netherlands was opened on April 8, 2015 at Leeuwarden. As a more eco-friendly and more economical fuel, natural gas now offers a realistic alternative to diesel.

GDF SUEZ LNG Solutions, the Dutch subsidiary of GDF SUEZ, has opened a natural gas fuel filling station for trucks. The project is being run in partnership with the Salland Olie Firezone filling station in Leeuwarden and FrieslandCampina, the Dutch dairy products cooperative.

The new filling station is central to the Group's commitment to develop clean sustainable mobility solutions.

Boosting clean mobility with natural gas in The Netherlands

Dutch local and regional authorities are actively encouraging the use of LNG fuel as a route to improving air quality. The road transportation industry and the use of a clean vehicle fuel could make a major contribution to achieving that goal, because as a more eco-friendly solution, LNG fuel reduces CO2, fine particulate and nitrogen oxides (NOx). LNG-fueled engines also run quieter.

As a result, the environmental impact imposed by LNG-fueled vehicles is a significant one: they emit 20% less CO2 and up to 95% less fine particulates and nitrogen oxides than trucks running on diesel.

The Leeuwarden filling station will be the template for around fifteen other LNG stations to be developed by GDF SUEZ LNG Solutions throughout the country.

The GDF SUEZ Group improves access to natural gas for industrial companies

  • GDF SUEZ is a global LNG market leader and Europe's largest importer. As a committed contributor to the sustainable energy transition, the Group is expanding its range to offer a new competitively priced and eco-friendly source of energy as an alternative to heavy fuel oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
  • In 2012, the GDF SUEZ Group launcheda complete LNG-based solution for the Dutch road transportation market . GDF SUEZ LNG Solutions was set up with the aim of helping Dutch road and sea freight operators to switch from diesel to LNG by investing in refueling facilities.

  • The Group is now engaged in a program of developing new LNG services in Europe. As part of this program, LNGeneration - the GDF SUEZ Group subsidiary created in September 2013 - promotes and facilitates access to natural gas for industrial companies with no mains gas connection. Examples include the Lactalis dairy products multinational, with LNGeneration supplies from the Montoir de Bretagne LNG terminal.
