Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) (NYSE:GWR) today reported traffic volumes for February 2015.

G&W’s traffic in February 2015 was 145,127 carloads, an increase of 2,325 carloads, or 1.6%, compared with February 2014. G&W’s same-railroad traffic in February 2015 was 137,816 carloads, a decrease of 4,986 carloads, or 3.5%, compared with February 2014.

G&W’s traffic in the first quarter of 2015 through February was 312,476 carloads, an increase of 13,090 carloads, or 4.4%, compared with the first quarter of 2014 through February. G&W’s same-railroad traffic in the first quarter of 2015 through February was 297,072 carloads, a decrease of 2,314 carloads, or 0.8%, compared with the first quarter of 2014 through February.

G&W’s traffic in February was weaker than the Company’s expectations primarily due to weakness in steam coal and metals traffic. In addition, extreme winter weather conditions in several of G&W’s North American regions, including the Northeast, Coastal and Central Regions, has adversely impacted traffic.

The following highlights relate to same-railroad traffic, excluding traffic from the Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Railroad, which commenced operations on June 1, 2014 and the Arkansas Midland Railroad, the Prescott & Northwestern Railroad and the Warren & Saline River Railroad, which were acquired on January 5, 2015.

  • North American traffic decreased 4,059 carloads, or 3.3%, primarily due to decreases in metals and coal & coke traffic.
  • Australian traffic decreased 927 carloads, or 5.1%, primarily due to decreased metallic ores, intermodal and agricultural products traffic.
  • Metals traffic decreased 2,817 carloads, or 21.9%, primarily due to decreased shipments in G&W’s Southern, Northeast, Ohio Valley and Coastal regions.
  • Coal & coke traffic decreased 2,752 carloads, or 10.4%, primarily due to decreased shipments of steam coal in G&W’s Central, Northeast, Ohio Valley and Mountain West regions, partially offset by increased shipments in G&W’s Midwest Region.
  • All remaining traffic increased by a net 583 carloads.

  • North American traffic decreased 775 carloads, or 0.3%, primarily due to decreased metals traffic, partially offset by increased overhead Class 1 shipments.
  • Australian traffic decreased 1,539 carloads, or 4.2%, primarily due to decreased metallic ores and agricultural products traffic, partially offset by increased minerals & stone traffic.
  • Metals traffic decreased 3,088 carloads, or 11.9%, primarily due to decreased shipments in G&W’s Southern and Northeast regions.
  • G&W’s Other commodity group traffic increased 2,960 carloads, or 32.8%, primarily due to overhead Class 1 shipments.
  • Minerals & stone traffic increased 2,892 carloads, or 9.3%, primarily due to increased shipments across most G&W regions.
  • All remaining traffic decreased by a net 5,078 carloads.

Other

Historically, G&W has found that carload information may be indicative of freight revenues on its railroads, but may not be indicative of total revenues, operating expenses, operating income or net income. Car movements related to railcar switching, including activities at port terminals, are excluded from our carload information as the resulting revenues are classified as non-freight.
