Training to become a process engineer in glass technology in Wackersdorf

Wackersdorf, May 29, 2018. Gerresheimer Regensburg GmbH will be offering a process engineer apprenticeship in the specialist field of glass technology from fall 2018. The scheme will be run in partnership with the technical college for glassmaking in Zwiesel and will be taught in blocks. Process engineers are responsible for controlling and monitoring glass processing and finishing.

Process engineers in glass technology regulate and maintain machines and computer-aided systems for manufacturing glass products such as syringes and cartridges. The apprentices will learn how machinery and systems can be configured and maintained ready for work. In such a sensitive area as the pharmaceutical industry, it is absolutely imperative that quality management and assurance methods and tools are reliably applied at every stage of this process. During the training, the apprentices will start by learning basic metalworking skills and how to read and produce technical drawings. They will also familiarize themselves with the mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical inner workings of machinery and gain a thorough understanding of different types of glass, their properties, and how they are moulded.

A pharmaceutical and healthcare specialist with an international reach, Gerresheimer has already been pooling its expert knowledge of glass and plastics under one roof for several years in the form of the Medical Systems division. This also involves building glass expertise at sites that have previously focused on processing plastic. CEO of Gerresheimer Regensburg GmbH Manfred Baumann had this to say about the introduction of the new apprenticeship: 'We will be launching small batch production at our Technical Competence Center (TCC) in Wackersdorf, which will allow us to develop glass products from the concept and clinical testing phases right through to small-batch, industrial-scale production. The new apprenticeship will secure the next generation of specialists in this area.'
