Warsaw, 17 April 2014

Launch of a Platform of Exchange of Ideas on the Future of the Capital Market and Its Role in the Development of Poland

PRESS RELEASE

  • IRIS Views is a platform of publication of opinions, expert statements, comments and serious debates on important issues of the capital market and its role in the economy and society.
  • The IRIS project allows independent experts, authorities, market practitioners and students to present their views.

Warsaw Stock Exchange in partnership with the European Financial Congress, Obserwator Finansowy and Project Syndicate Polska initiates a serious debate on the capital market and its role in the economy and society.

IRIS Views is a forum of presentation and exchange of views on local and international issues. The platform will introduce the Polish audience to developments and trends on foreign markets and present the Polish market to audiences beyond Poland. It is the aspiration of IRIS Views to help understand the increasingly dynamic and complex world of capital markets as well as the interrelation between it, the economy and our everyday life. The presentation of diverse opinions will also facilitate substantive debate on important problems of the capital market and the opportunities and challenges it is faced with.

The IRIS Views project has been initiated by a group of individuals affiliated with WSE but the initiative will be open to new partners willing to participate in creating and developing the platform. Along with recognised authorities, experts and prominent managers, it will publish young people's points of view and new, ambitious, even controversial ideas.

"The Polish capital market is undergoing a historical transition. The existing operating model of the exchange driven by large privatisation projects of state-owned companies is coming to an end. Furthermore, we work in a very competitive external environment, including dynamically growing alternative platforms of trading in financial instruments. Therefore, we need a constructive debate on proposed new solutions supporting development which will not only involve market participants but reach far beyond our community. The platform will publish papers by established authorities from Poland and abroad as well as ideas of young authors," said Adam Maciejewski, President of the Management Board of Warsaw Stock Exchange.

"The main goal of the European Financial Congress is to seek solutions which improve the stability of the financial system in Europe and in Poland. I am certain that the creation of a platform of exchange of ideas on the future of the capital market may activate Polish intellectual capital for the sake of a better future: sustainable and safe growth of the economy and a credible capital market, which is attractive to investors and where companies can raise inexpensive funding for their business. It is with great pleasure that we join the IRIS Views initiative which is aligned with the mission and goals of the European Financial Congress," said Professor Leszek Pawłowicz, Director of the European Financial Congress.

"The future of Poland is also the future of our capital market. We have seen in the last years that nothing is given forever and the rules change fast. We have to think and work hard to ensure that Warsaw has the strongest possible position on the financial map of Europe. Therefore, it is with great satisfaction that we welcome the launch of the Iris Views project, a new initiative of WSE. We will support it on our portal which publishes the world's most prominent experts in economics, business and international affairs," said Michał Kobosko, Editor-in-Chief of Project Syndicate Polska.

"We see the need to amplify the public debate in Poland as it currently pays too little attention to understanding how important the development of financial institutions and strategies is to the future of companies and the economy as a whole and, consequently, to the prosperity of not only financial market participants but the society at large. We will participate in the IRIS View project because similar to its initiator, WSE, we want to improve the quality of economic knowledge in Poland," said Krzysztof Bień, Editor-in-Chief of Obserwatorfinansowy.pl.

The activity of IRIS Views opens with two publications:

  • article of WSE President Adam Maciejewski on the role and directions of development of the Polish capital market (Warsaw Capital City or On Making Dreams Come True, or Permanent Impotence)
  • article co-authored by Adam Maciejewski, Professor Leszek Pawłowicz and President Wiesław Rozłucki on a project of creating an independent institution working for improved credibility of the capital markets (Break-through Project To Enhance Market Credibility)

Texts of IRIS Views authors are published on the knowledge and opinion portal Project Syndicate Polska which is a partner of IRIS Views.
