Kola MMC (subsidiary of MMC Norilsk Nickel) upgrades electric motors and control systems of hoist engines installed at Severny mine skip shaft transporting over 500 thousand tons of ore per annum. Skip winding section operates four-rope hoist machines with direct current electric motors. Both electric motors and corresponding control systems were kept in operation throughout an extensive campaign but now are both worn out and obsolete increasing the risk of emergency situation.

DC motors will be replaced with cage rotor AC equivalents on all hoist engines as part of modernization program. New and efficient frequency converters, dispensers, safety loops, motion control, measurement and regulation units will function within the scope of multi-processor control system framework. Additionally, it is planned to introduce an all-new visual monitoring system consisting of various streaming equipment. Furthermore, modernization program aims to improve consistency of hoist engine operations and reduce downtime caused by equipment malfunctions by introducing a comprehensive diagnostic system to accelerate failure detection.

Project completion is scheduled for January 2015 and its total cost is planned to exceed RUB 750 million.
