We are never done innovating. This is by far one of CEO and founder Nick Woodman's favorite ways to describe what's going on at GoPro at any given time. And in the spirit of innovation, GoPro recently wrapped up its fourth annual Hackathon.

The event encourages employees around the globe to hack current GoPro products to create those of the next generation. The rules were simple: gather a team at least three (max eight) full-time employees and circle for 40 whirlwind, sleepless hours to conceptualize, create and execute a new idea for GoPro.

From augmented reality to unlocking new camera and software capabilities, the ideas were shared in true GoPro style via a two-minute video; some were serious, some were seriously funny, but all hit upon innovations waiting to be made. Entries came from offices around the world, from headquarters in San Mateo, Calif., to France and Bucharest.

The Hackathon Award Categories were Most Innovative, Most Shippable, Best Product Concept, People's Choice (which was, of course, selected by employee votes) and Best Overall. Honorable Mention and Spirit awards were also given; the latter specifically honored a team that took the hack beyond tech and into overall career advancement by pitching a company-wide mentorship program.

While we can't get too into the nitty gritty of the victorious teams' ideas, we can say they wowed the prestigious six-judge panel led by Nick and leads representing the hardware, design, developer, finance and communications departments.

2017 Hackathon Winners are as follows:

  • Auto Detection & Best Overall: The Collectors/San Mateo
  • Most Innovative: Sync Slayers/San Diego
  • Most Shippable: Share Nobyl/Issy, France
  • Spirit Award: Not Your Average Hackers/San Mateo
  • Honorable Mention: The Musketeers/Issy, France
  • Peoples Choice: Dracula's Kids/Bucharest
