Six days ago the 2017 Puerto Escondido Challenge was just a distant swell that caught the attention of the WSL Big Wave Tour. Over the weekend, it became clear that the SSW swell would hit legendary beachbreak just right and deliver 25'+ faces. And on Monday, 24 big wave surfers turned out for the first official heats of 2017 Big Wave Tour season.
Ultimately, Maui-native Kai Lenny snagged the contest title for his first-ever Big Wave Tour victory on an 8.60, three-and-a-half-minute-long left.
Kai grew up charging all the waves on whatever board he could get his hands on. So today, he's killing it as a big-wave surfer, SUP surfer, tow-in surfer, windsurfer, kitesurfer and basically any other sport that ends in 'surfer.' He started gaining momentum as a name to be reckoned with in 2012 after winning both the Hawaii Island Final SUP Pro and the first SUP World Series Championship in Oahu.
Kai held nothing back on Monday in the finals. He was looking for a 5.99 ride in the last three minutes of the comp and was up against Aussie Jamie Mitchell, who was charging despite coming off a broken sternum from the same break last July. But when Kai hit the perfect bottom turn and pulled cleanly out of the barrel, everyone on the beach knew he just snagged arguably the biggest win of his career.
