Fueled by growing demand for data science skills, leading data science training provider Metis continues its expansion of offerings, announcing the launch of its first program in Chicago, a six-week part-time course focused on machine learning. In addition, Metis announced the inauguration of a new part-time Introduction to Data Science course in New York City, as well as the extension of its existing part-time data visualization course -- currently running in New York -- to San Francisco. The new part-time professional development courses include:

  • Machine Learning: Algorithms and Applications,” in Chicago, provides an overview of the core principles of machine learning with an intense focus on implementing popular machine learning algorithms to solve problems. Classes commence in mid-July.
  • Introduction to Data Science,” in New York City, teaches the data scientific approach to thinking about data-heavy problems, helping students learn how to deliver solutions. The course will begin in mid-April.
  • Data Visualization with D3.JS,” now available in San Francisco, was designed by Kevin Quealy, Graphics Editor at The New York Times. It teaches students how to visualize quantitative information via D3, the powerful JavaScript library frequently used to create data visualizations online. Classes start at the end of April.

The Chicago program represents Metis’ debut in the Windy City, joining established affiliate company Dev Bootcamp, which is also part of Kaplan’s New Economy Skills Training (NEST) unit. Chicago ranks as one of the hottest cities for data scientist jobs; according to Crain's, the city ranks “behind only Silicon Valley and perhaps Seattle and New York."

The new offerings are the latest additions to the Metis portfolio of programs and follow a series of recent moves that include the provider’s expansion to San Francisco, the acquisition of Booz Allen Hamilton’s Explore Data Science program, and the hiring of noted data scientist Dr. Deborah Berebichez.

“We’ve been excited by the strong interest we’ve seen in data science learning, not only across a spectrum of topics, from introductory concepts to focused areas of specialty, but also across geographies,” said Jason Moss, co-founder and general manager of Metis. “We look forward to delivering best-in-class programs that serve the demand for data science competencies from employers, professionals and job-seekers in tech hubs across the country. Our goal is to bring a holistic approach to data science education through bootcamps, part-time professional development courses, introductory resources and corporate training.”

While the role of data scientist ranks as the best job in America on jobs website Glassdoor’s 2016 list, McKinsey and Company reports that 140,000-190,000 job postings for data scientists will go unfilled by 2018.

Metis is now taking enrollments for all three new courses.
