01.09.2015

Hammerson's Retail Tracker (HART)*, which monitors sales activity across its shopping centres, has seen sales rise 1.8% in the four weeks to 15 August 2015.

Top performing categories in the period have benefited from the peak holiday season, with positive impacts seen across segments including health and beauty, jewellery and summer footwear.

Summer holiday preparations
Cult-favourite One Direction's branded perfume range has proved a firm favourite with teen shoppers at Cabot Circus in Bristol, with the portfolio as a whole enjoying an uplift of 3% in health and beauty sales during the four weeks to 15th August. With the Beach at Brent Cross continuing to attract shoppers, SPF moisturisers and body lotions were also popular items for the category.

Bejewelled Brits abroad
Adding a touch of glamour to holiday outfits, consumers invested in statement pieces, driving sales of jewellery up 9.6%. Rolex watches have remained a popular choice, along with promotional activity to welcome new collections of bracelets and rings.

Trending footwear
Strong summer trends have pushed up footwear sales by 5.4%. Consumers at Silverburn, Glasgow, have been channelling the sports-luxe vibe, with strong sales of embellished retro-style fashion trainers, whilst the holiday-season spiked sales of coloured Havaiana flip-flops in Union Square, Aberdeen.

Commenting on the results from HART, CEO David Atkins said:

"Summer months typically generate strong performance in the health and beauty segment as consumers prepare for holidays, and this is also a time when younger shoppers spend more time at our centres - reflected in the particular popularity of the celebrity fragrances and fashion-forward trends during this period.

"We are just beginning to see the impact of back-to-school purchases and the onset of more inclement weather, and will be monitoring sales across the portfolio through the transition to autumn."
