Hammerson celebrates official opening of Silverburn's leisure extension

26.06.2015

Hammerson has today officially opened its exciting new £20 million leisure extension at Silverburn in Glasgow. The 100,000 sq ft development is anchored by a 50,000sq ft 14-screen Cineworld and features 11 new restaurants, including Carluccio's, Chimichanga, Cosmo, Zizzi, Pret, TGI Friday's and Five Guys.

Completion of the extension to Silverburn marks the most significant investment project undertaken by Hammerson and CPPIB, since acquiring the shopping centre in 2009. Designed to further increase Silverburn's appeal to local customers, the extension is expected to attract over one million additional visitors through Silverburn's doors.

In addition to the new brands in the extended Wintergarden, existing restaurants, such as Pizza Hut and Nando's, have strengthened their presence at Silverburn, launching new concepts to coincide with the opening.

As part of the £20 million investment, in excess of 350 permanent retail and leisure jobs have been created.

To mark the launch, Cineworld and Hammerson hosted an exclusive event on 24th June within Cineworld's unique Superscreen theatre, where guests were welcomed to an exclusive premiere of The Minions Movie.

Guy Wells, Development Manager at Hammerson, said: "Creating leading destinations goes beyond pure retail. Today's discerning customers are looking for more experiences, where dining and leisure activities complement the very best retail mix. So we are delighted to have secured such a strong dining offer, with well-known brands bringing new and exciting concepts to Silverburn.

"By delivering more for Silverburn's visitors, the centre is now set to play an even greater role in the local community and beyond, which is not only important in helping to drive dwell time, catering and retail sales, but it is also vital in future-proofing the continued success of Silverburn."

Mooky Greidinger, Cineworld CEO, added: "Silverburn appealed to us due to its strong regional catchment and the new leisure extension was a fantastic opportunity. The space allowed us to launch the first Superscreen in Scotland, creating an immersive experience that will thrill customers."
