Assistant Director and Group Financial Controller of Hang Lung Cleaned Up Deep Bay with Volunteers and Students

(Hong Kong, December 1, 2014) Mr. Raymond Mak, Assistant Director and Group Financial Controller of Hang Lung Properties Limited, acted as cleaning ambassador last Saturday (November 29) to visit and clean the Deep Bay, one of Hong Kong's most important natural reserves, with 30 Hang Lung volunteers and 60 primary school students from low-income families in Kowloon City and Wong Tai Sin districts.

Deep Bay covers approximately 1,500 hectares in the Northwest New Territories and is the second largest wetland in Southern China. Volunteers and students spent about an hour to clean the Deep Bay. The types of rubbish collected ranges from polystyrene, plastic bottles, glass bottles, tires to broken shoes. This cleaning experience inspired all participants to think more about how to protect the natural resources in Hong Kong.

For Mr. Raymond Mak as well as for most of the volunteers and students, this marked the first visit to Deep Bay. "I enjoy staying in the natural environment," Mr. Raymond Mak said. "I usually go hiking and bird watching but this is the first time for me to take part in this kind of cleaning activity. I am not only surprised by the numerous kinds of rubbish collected, but also very glad to see that students tried their best to clean up the area regardless of the hardship. I believe today's activity can inspire both volunteers and students to think about reducing rubbish in their daily lives."

The visit was part of the "Hang Lung Green LEEDers" program, which is in its third year. The program involves Hang Lung volunteers leading groups of 60 primary school students from low-income families on a series of four activities with different themes: low-carbon living, energy-saving, eco-experience, and diversion of waste. During these activities, students are able to learn the latest green knowledge and how to put this knowledge into practice in their daily lives. Hang Lung volunteers act as mentors for the students, and they appraise students' performance during the program.
