Hang Lung Mathematics Awards Celebrates 10th Anniversary Invites World-Class Mathematicians to Join the Scientific Committee

(Hong Kong, November 13, 2014) The Hang Lung Mathematics Awards ("HLMA"), which is co-organized by Hang Lung Properties Limited (HKSE stock code: 101) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong's Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Department of Mathematics, will host its awards presentation ceremony on December 11, 2014 at the Asia Society Hong Kong Center. The HLMA's Scientific Committee is currently reviewing the reports submitted and will shortlist outstanding reports for the final assessment, during which teams will conduct an oral defense of their projects before the Scientific Committee.

Entering its 10th year, HLMA has received an overwhelming response from secondary schools throughout Hong Kong, with over 200 students participating in this year's competition. The Scientific Committee, which comprises some of the most respected mathematicians in the world, upholds the academic standards and integrity of the competition by evaluating the submitted project reports and judging the oral defense. In addition to the 1982 Fields Medalist Professor Shing-Tung Yau as the Chairman, other committee members include the following eminent mathematicians: Professor Lars Andersson from the Albert Einstein Institute in Germany, Professor Raymond Hon-Fu Chan from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), President and Professor Tony F. Chan from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Professor Shiu Yuen Cheng from Tsinghua University, Professor Jaigyoung Choe from Korea Institute for Advanced Study, Professor Ingrid Daubechies from Duke University, Professor Ka-Sing Lau from CUHK, Professor John M. Lee from University of Washington, Professor Ngai-Ming Mok from The University of Hong Kong, Professor Duong H. Phong from Columbia University, Professor Mark A. Stern from Duke University, Professor Ye Tian from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Tom Yau Heng Wan from CUHK, and Professor Michael Wolf from Rice University. Among them, Professor John M. Lee is the author of many of the mathematical textbooks that are widely used by students in universities in Hong Kong. This year's HLMA is an unprecedented opportunity for participating students to meet Professor Lee and discuss mathematics with him. In addition, two other notable mathematicians on the Committee include Professor Lars Andersson, who focuses on geometric analysis and general relativity, and Professor Ingrid Daubechies, who is an expert on image compression and the first female president of the International Mathematical Union. The Scientific Committee will host the oral defense day on December 10, 2014 to select the winners of the Gold, Silver, Bronze Awards and Honorable Mentions for this year's HLMA.

Founded in 2004, the objective of the biennial HLMA is to encourage secondary school students to realize their potential in the creativity of mathematics and sciences by stimulating their passion for intellectual discovery. This prestigious event has nurtured over 1,700 secondary school students, awarding HK$6 million in scholarships to assist their university studies and further pursuits over the past decade.
