4K is a solution that offers four times the resolution of 1080p HD, which means crystal clear clarity and a life-like viewing experience. With it comes a range of benefits for surveillance, like the ability to reduce the number of cameras you need and the ability to zoom in for close detail without the image pixilating beyond recognition. These are just a couple of reasons why end-users are excited with this technology.

Hikvision's 4K Family

Hikvision introduces a complete range of 4K surveillance products to provide an Ultra-High Definition (UHD) video solution for security applications. The 4K family features Hikvision's H.264+ Smart Codec, which reduces bandwidth and storage requirements by 50% compared to standard H.264 codecs while maximizing video resolution with its optimized high-compression technology.

Adler Wu, product manager at Hikvision says 4K cameras are particularly suitable for large scenes where more image details are required, such as in city surveillance or stadium/venue projects. But also airports, critical infrastructure and railway applications can be added to the list of areas in which 4K can be used effectively.

'These products introduce the next big trend in video surveillance and will further increase the effectiveness of retrospective analysis. Highly detailed images make it easy to clearly distinguish individuals or minor details. The camera's ability to give a wide-angle overview and multiple focus points on a single screen helps to focus on details without losing the bigger picture. Especially in applications with a high security risk, we see an increase demand for such highly detailed images.'

UHD

The 4K family, which includes the award winning Ultra HD Smart IR PTZ, bullet and box cameras along with a variety of 4K NVR models, delivers UHD images, providing 4K resolution in real time. The high quality images also improve video analytics performance. Limited resolution has hindered video analysis in the past, but now the additional pixels in 4K technology allow for better resolution and improved image enhancement, which in turn allow for more information to be extracted from the scene. The result is an improvement in the accuracy and quality of video analysis making it more valuable for users.

Smart Features

As a part of the Hikvision Smart product family, the new 4K products are equipped with smart features that put intelligence, efficiency, and ease-to-use at the heart of this state-of-the-art video surveillance range. Smart technologies include face detection, intrusion detection, line crossing detection, and smart focus. Smart tracking capability enables the cameras to detect any progressively moving object and follow it within the camera's area of coverage, while Smart video analytics includes region enter/exit, object left behind/object removed, and more.

4K Output

The Hikvision 4K NVRs support the HDMI 2.0 output interface, allowing users to display 4K video for monitoring applications. As a result, Hikvision's 4K family offers users an end-to-end 4K ultra-high-resolution solution, providing users with 4K monitoring, recording, and playback.

Bandwidth & H.264+ Smart Codec

The launch of Hikvision's 4K family comes as concerns grow about the burden placed on the transmission system and storage when CCTV cameras and NVRs lacking dedicated 4K-compatible components are installed. This is no problem with the 4K family, incorporated with H.264+ optimized compression it allows users to more efficiently manage Ultra-High Definition video footage. With features such as background-based predictive smart encoding, enhanced noise suppression, and optimized bitrate control, Hikvision's H.264+ compression saves bandwidth resources and decreases storage requirements. The result is a complete system designed for immediate practical use, providing customers with genuinely useful end-to-end smart high-resolution security video.

Wu says on bandwidth-related issue that most 4K cameras currently available still use H.264 chipsets, which can create overload issues for the transmission and storage of surveillance footage. 'The biggest factor affecting widespread adoption of 4K is storage and bandwidth requirements, which will be greatly intensified.'

Hikvision's 4K family comes with several functions that help reduce bandwidth. Besides automatically alerting when certain criteria are met and assisting in retrieving the correct data, intelligent video analysis at the edge provides the camera the ability to decide what to stream or not to stream to the network based on relevancy. Also depending on movement and varying light intensity, camera settings are continuously and dynamically adjusted to ensure perfect exposure of objects of interest, while reducing bitrate by up to 50%. Consequently, storage costs and network strain are reduced significantly without compromising video quality.
