Hays, the leading recruiting expert, today launched a two year fundraising partnership with The Brain Tumour Charity, the UK's leading charity dedicated to fighting this devastating disease, with the goal of raising over £100,000 to fund a world-class research Centre of Excellence.

Over 2,000 staff across the company's 100 offices in the UK will be holding sponsored events, undertaking challenges and trekking the globe to raise vital funds in the fight against brain tumours.

The money raised by Hays staff will fund a world class Centre of Excellence of research into brain tumours. The Charity is currently assessing applications to host the centre and will announce the chosen institution later in the year. It will join The Charity's existing Centre of Excellence, the Samantha Dickson Brain Cancer Unit at the UCL Cancer Institute in London, which is a state-of-the-art facility established in 2009 incorporating the most advanced technologies and is already making striking breakthroughs in knowledge and treatments for the disease.

Over 9,000 people are diagnosed with a brain tumour each year and brain tumours are the largest cancer killer of children and adults under 40. The Brain Tumour Charity's mission is to fund and promote research to improve understanding, diagnosis and treatment of brain tumours and ultimately find a cure. The Brain Tumour Charity is the largest dedicated funder of research into brain tumours in the UK and leads the way in ensuring that all research funded is selected through stringent, independent peer review. The Charity offers a comprehensive service to enable everyone with a brain tumour, their families and carers to receive the best support and information and achieve the highest quality of life possible as well as raising awareness of brain tumours to improve life chances.

Hays is the first major corporate partner for The Brain Tumour Charity, and by partnering with a growing charity Hays will be making a lasting contribution to the research landscape in the UK.

Nigel Heap, Managing Director, Hays UK & Ireland, said: "We're delighted to be supporting The Brain Tumour Charity in funding vital research into brain tumours and providing care and support for those affected. We raised over £170,000 for our last charity partner, Alzheimer's Society, and our staff have a history of going the extra mile to raise money for charity, whether by jumping out of a plane or climbing mountains at night. We're looking forward to seeing the impact our fundraising efforts will have on the important work of The Brain Tumour Charity."

Sarah Lindsell, CEO of The Brain Tumour Charity said: "We are very grateful to Hays for this opportunity and looking forward enormously to working with all of the Hays employees. Only 2% of cancer research funding goes on brain tumours in the UK. It's through the efforts of companies like Hays we can change that in the future, and bring hope to the thousands of people who are diagnosed with a brain tumour every year."

About The Brain Tumour Charity
Registered Charity No. 1150054 (England and Wales) SC042096 (Scotland)
The Brain Tumour Charity is the UK's largest dedicated brain tumour charity, formed as a result of the merger of The Brain Tumour Charity (formerly Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust), Brain Tumour UK and The Joseph Foote Trust in March 2013. They fund scientific and clinical research into brain tumours and offer support and information to those affected, whilst raising awareness and influencing policy. Their aim is to improve understanding, diagnosis and treatment of brain tumours.

The Brain Tumour Charity is the only brain tumour charity to fund research through a fair, open and transparent process of peer review and the only one to be a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities. Each year they invest £2.5million in world class research and aim to significantly increase this.

They fund and promote the UK-wide HeadSmart campaign, raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of brain tumours in children and young people to make earlier diagnosis a reality. Earlier diagnosis will reduce long term disabilities and save lives.

Brain tumours - the facts
• Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40.
• Over 9,000 people are diagnosed each year with a primary brain tumour, including 500 children and young people - 25 people every day.
• Almost 5,000 people lose their lives to a brain tumour each year.
• Thousands more are diagnosed with secondary brain tumours, which are not recorded.
• Brain tumours are the largest cause of preventable or treatable blindness in children.
• Brain tumours reduce life expectancy by on average 20 years - the highest of any cancer.
• Just 14% of adults survive for five years after diagnosis.
• Childhood brain tumour survivors are 10 times more likely to suffer long term disability than well children. This accounts for 20,000 additional disabled life years for all the children who are diagnosed each year.
• Research offers the only real hope of dramatic improvements in the management and treatment of brain tumours. Over £500m is spent on cancer research in the UK every year, yet less than 2% is spent on brain tumours.
