The Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat), the Province of Noord-Brabant and the Municipality of Tilburg intend to award a contract to the combination Heijmans-Boskalis for the widening and deepening of the Wilhelmina Canal and the construction of a new lock. The contract is valued at a total of over €51 million (incl. VAT). The award is provisional and is expected to become definitive at the end of May.

The municipality and the province aim to provide excellent access to the city via water, road and rail to enable the city to continue and strengthen its economic position. Bringing the Wilhelmina Canal up to modern standards is one of the means in achieving this goal. The project consists of widening and deepening the current canal (over 4 km), the construction of a new lock (alongside the current Lock III) and the removal of Lock II. Heijmans will assume responsibility for the construction of the new lock, while Boskalis will carry out the work on the canal.

The balance between price and quality was a decisive factor in the provisional award of this contract. Limitation of inconvenience to the surroundings, the capacity for cooperation and the control of costs by leveraging opportunities and risk management were decisive in this respect.

Work will commence in October 2013. The new lock will become operational in May 2015, after which the water level will be reduced in September 2015. The entire project will be completed in 2016.
