HEIJMANS : to renovate and redevelop 'De Resident' in The Hague.

The Government Buildings Agency has commissioned Heijmans to renovate and redevelop the ministries of Social Affairs and Employment (SZW) and Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) in the premises of 'De Resident' in The Hague.  The total surface area is 60,000 m2 GFA and the contract is valued at approximately € 20 million.

The contract includes the renovation of the Helicon and Castalia buildings; both are components of 'De Resident', which is located on the Parnassusplein in the centre of The Hague. An important part of the contract concerns the new construction of an atrium, which connects both buildings. The renovation and new construction will be fully implemented and Heijmans is responsible for both the structural and installation-engineering provisions.

The contract was in part obtained on the basis of the Most Economically Advantageous Tender (MEAT), for which Heijmans achieved the highest score. The limited space at the inner city location during the realization is a main point of attention for which smart solutions are required. To meet the tight building schedule, Heijmans uses the so-called 'lean planning' method, which enables efficient planning to shorten the lead time of the commission.

After the renovation and redevelopment, the building complex will accommodate 2,400 workplaces for employees of the ministries of VWS and SZW. Purpose and rationale of the co-accommodation is to achieve a more efficient housing based on 'the New World of Work'. In the same area, Heijmans is also transforming and realizing the former housing of the ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations in the so-called 'Wijnhavenkwartier'. 

Heijmans will start the works this month; completion will take place one year later.
