The Rijksvastgoedbedrijf (Central Government Real Estate Agency) has tasked Heijmans with performing fire safety checks and modifications on 32 Ministry of Defence dormitories. It is no longer always the case that these buildings are compliant with current fire safety requirements.

In order to ensure that the buildings can be evacuated safely within a set time, modifications will need to be carried out. The buildings' fire safety standards are to be in order by the end of October 2018. The assignment is worth in excess of €8 million.

A start has already been made on comprehensive fire safety checks at all 32 sites in order to ascertain what exactly needs to be modified. Based on the results, a plan will be developed for each dormitory, on the basis of the economically most advantageous design (EMVO in Dutch).

Work pertaining to construction and equipment will commence in September. Throughout the project military personnel will temporarily be moved to alternative dormitories.

Dormitories are quarters in which military personnel live and sleep. Of the 32 dormitories, nine buildings are at the Johannes Post Barracks in the village of Darp in Drenthe. The other 23 are on the Walaardt Sacre Camp (two buildings), the Legerplaats in Ermelo (eight buildings), the LKOL Tonnet Barracks (seven buildings), the Prinses Margriet Barracks (five buildings) and the Legerplaats at Oldenbroek (one building).
