How Intelligent Edge computing is writing the new language of machines

In the next three years, over 26 billion devices will be connected to the Internet. That's a lot of 'things' being added to the IoT, making our systems more connected, computational, and controlling than ever. With the vast amounts of data set to be created by these devices, it's essential that analytics capabilities are in place in order to turn all this information into something actionable. That's where the Intelligent Edge comes in to play.

Edge computing can create smarter cities, more customized retail experiences, better manufacturing and more. For enterprises, the Intelligent Edge can yield deeper insights faster to transform business. Its applications are evidence across a broad scope of industries, from manufacturing and oil & gas to transportation and law enforcement.

This week on STACK That, we're talking with Jay Kreps, CEO & Co-Founder of Confluent, about applications for Intelligent Edge as it applies to transportation. We dive into autonomous driving, how data is changing IT and the security implications that come with Intelligent Edge computing.

'I find really interesting,' says Jay Kreps. 'It's one of a number of examples where you are seeing companies that have existed for a long time suddenly adding this whole digital dimension to their business and then trying to figure out how to build it-what does it look like?'

Edge computing is where the next revolution in innovation will happen, and it's key to note that this is a data-driven trend. As more apps and data move to the edge - more data will be created here and must be analyzed here. For that reason, we believe that HPE must embed more intelligence into the devices, access points and machines - not only to enable them to analyze the massive influx of data, but also more intelligence to help manage and most importantly secure the complexity and scale.

Jay Kreps, CEO & Co-Founder at Confluent

Jay Kreps is the CEO of Confluent, Inc., a company backing the popular Apache Kafka messaging system used by HPE Aruba's IntroSpect solution. Prior to founding Confluent, he was formerly the lead architect for data infrastructure at LinkedIn. He is among the original authors of several open source projects including Project Voldemort (a key-value store). Apache Kafka (a distributed messaging system) and Apache Samza (a stream processing system).

Florian Leibert, Co-Founder & CEO at Mesosphere
