Osaka, Japan, December 9, 2016-Hitachi Zosen Corporation (TYO:7004) has announced that Hitachi Zosen Corporation today entered into a comprehensive cooperation agreement with the Lao Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) for project development in the field of environment and green energy.
The partnership is set to discuss the contents of the project toward harnessing sustainable energy sources, introducing related systems, and promoting the use of green energy in Lao PDR based on the needs of the country's energy policies.

■Energy situation in Lao PDR
Lao PDR is a net export country of hydroelectric power harnessing its abundant water resources, moreover that electric power has become an important source of income for the country.
Also with the expansion of the mining, manufacturing, and service industries, Lao PDR enjoys a consistently high rate of economic growth in recent years. The growth of the economy has stimulated interest in new sources of sustainable energy and effective uses of electric power. Advanced technologies from Japan are expected to play a role in project development.

■Lao PDR delegation to Japan
Delegates from MEM, the Lao Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), and Électricité du Laos (EDL) have visited Hitachi Zosen's facilities related to environment and green energy technology such as Methanation, Methane Fermentation System, Bio-Fuel and Energy from Waste as a part of the study visit for the 'Low-Carbon Technology Innovation Projects' hosted by MOEJ. By sharing knowledge about its business activities with MEM and MONRE officials, Hitachi Zosen seeks to also create opportunities for business in Lao PDR.

■Moving forward
Hitachi Zosen will examine potential green energy projects based on the provisions of the agreement. Specifically, it will consider the following contents and present recommendations suitable to the actual needs of Lao PDR.
•Power-to-gas using hydroelectric power
•Methane fermentation for converting organic waste into energy
•Energy-from-Waste for waste treatment
•Biofuel production from agricultural produce

Hitachi Zosen hopes to draw on its broad range of technologies and expertise, and contribute to the development of the environment and energy sector in Lao PDR.
