Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), one of the nation’s leading health and well-being companies, achieved its highest ranking to date on Newsweek’s annual ranking of the world’s largest companies corporate sustainability and environmental impact.

Newsweek’s 2016 Green Rankings ranked Humana the highest among health insurers for environmental sustainability. Humana ranked No. 18 out of a total of 500 U.S. companies on the list – fourth in the health care sector overall. In the global rankings, Humana placed No. 33 out of 500 companies.

“This ranking is a wonderful validation that our long-term efforts to promote sustainability throughout the company are working,” said Douglas Edwards, Director of Workplace Solutions at Humana. “Our leaders and associates alike are committed to sustainability. We’ve found that our associates are very engaged in sustainability efforts, and they are the key to why these initiatives are working. In addition, we have great vendor partners who collaborate with us on these efforts.”

Humana’s environmental sustainability endeavors are focused on areas that represent the greatest need and where the company believes it can have the most impact. The company’s primary areas of focus are:

  • Energy management and emission reduction in data centers and facilities
  • Health care waste and plastics management
  • Associate-commute reduction

Humana ranked No. 25 in the 2015 Newsweek Green Rankings of U.S. companies and No. 69 in 2014.

The Newsweek Green Rankings, which launched in 2009, are one of the world’s most recognized assessments of corporate environmental performance. They assess the 500 largest publicly traded companies in the United States and the 500 largest publicly-traded companies globally on their environmental performance.

The rankings are developed based on eight specific indicators, which include energy, greenhouse gas, water and waste productivity, as well as the proportion of a company’s income derived from green products. The 2016 survey was conducted in conjunction with Corporate Knights and HIP (Human Impact + Profit) Investor Inc.

The rankings were announced one day after Humana released its 2014-2015 Corporate Social Responsibility Report. The report, the fourth that the company has released since 2009, details progress the company has made on multiple aspects of corporate social responsibility according to Humana’s three areas of focus: Healthy People, Healthy Planet and Healthy Performance. The endeavors detailed in the report represent Humana’s dedication to improving community health, including environmental, physical and mental well-being.
