The agreement provides in-network access to comprehensive addiction treatment services for Humana members who are covered by employer plans. Renew Recovery services are available at three locations in Kentucky – Louisville, Georgetown, and London – and include medication assisted treatment, psychiatric evaluation and management, psychotherapy in individual, group and family formats, and case management at outpatient and intensive outpatient levels of care.

“We are very excited to partner with Humana in our fight to address the Commonwealth’s drug addiction epidemic,” said Renew Recovery’s CEO Dr. Stephen Kronenberg. “This is a clear statement of our mutual commitment to helping those in need.”

According to the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), addiction to opioids – including to prescription pain relievers and heroin – is defined as a primary, chronic, and relapsing brain disease. Opioids killed nearly 30 Kentuckians per 100,000 in 2015, a rate significantly higher than the rest of the country (13.1 per 100,000). Drug overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death among Americans, with a greater number of annual related fatalities than those from car accidents and firearms, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency.

“As we focus on expanding access to addiction treatment centers for our members, we are encouraged by this agreement with Renew Recovery to join our network in Kentucky,” said Jack Szczepanowski, Humana’s Behavioral Health field vice president. “We are hopeful that together we can make a greater impact on helping our members connect with the care they need, when they need it in the fight against the opioid crisis.”
