As a reflection of its commitment to help people achieve their best health, Humana (NYSE: HUM) has announced its official sponsorship of the 2016 South Florida Senior Games, a series of sporting events held for adults 50 and older from the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale region. The events will be held Oct. 28 to Nov. 6 in various venues throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

As part of its sponsorship, Humana is honoring two senior athletes as Humana Game Changers, inspirational individuals who exemplify lifelong well-being through their spirit of determination, personal strength and dedication to their sport.

The 2016 South Florida Humana Game Changers are:

  • Ileana Alvarez-Builla, 64, of Miami, Florida: table tennis
  • Joann Sampson, 75, of Hallandale Beach, Florida: track & field

“Our Humana Game Changers, as well as all senior athletes participating in the South Florida Senior Games, prove that staying active and healthy is attainable at any age if you have the determination,” said Fernando J. Valverde, M.D., Humana regional Medicare president for South Florida. “They all serve as an inspiration to Humana associates and our members. It’s our honor to support them in their health journey.”

The senior athletes will compete in various sports, including cycling, dominos, foot golf, golf, judo, pickleball, powerlifting, road race, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track & field and volleyball.

“Humana supports our mission and our athletes by spotlighting the importance of focusing on health and well-being as we age,” said Jose Rodriguez, director of the South Florida Senior Games. “We look forward to the start of a great journey together.”

South Florida Senior Games athletes will compete to qualify for the statewide Florida Senior Games in December. Athletes compete at their state games to qualify for the National Senior Games presented by Humana, which will take place June 2 to 15 in Birmingham, Alabama.

Additionally, Humana has a “Bold Goal” to improve the health of the communities it serves by 20 percent by 2020. This goal is centered around communities and partnerships in breaking down the barriers that make health hard. Broward County is one of the places nationally where Humana is currently spearheading this community health initiative.
