  • This project strengthens Iberdrola's position as the leading private producer of electricity in Mexico. When the new power plant starts to operate, its installed capacity will be 6,500 MW.

Iberdrola has been awarded a major new energy generation project in Mexico, the Noreste combined cycle power plant, which will have a capacity of 850 megawatts (MW) and require some US$400 million in investment.

According to this award received from the Mexican government, I Iberdrola will be in charge of the construction, operation and maintenance of this generation plant, as well as being the owner of the facility.

The Noreste combined cycle power plant located in the municipality of Escobedo (Nuevo León state) will supply electricity to two million Mexican consumers. The company plans to connect the power plant to the grid in July 2018.

Iberdrola will sell all of the energy produced by this facility to the Mexican Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) under the terms of a 25-year contract with fixed capacity charges.

This contract with the CFE greatly increases the security of the investment made and this project is in keeping with Iberdrola's strategy to grow its business in regulated, predictable activities.

Work on the Noreste power plant will commence in early 2016. Parallel to the construction work, the company will also build all of the facilities that are necessary for the connection to the national electricity system, such as the power lines and the transformer substation.

The plant will be equipped with two state-of-the-art gas turbines and a steam turbine from Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS). The boilers will be supplied by U.S. firm Foster Wheeler.

Iberdrola's energy generation projects in Mexico currently amount to an investment worth over US$1 billion and are among the most important initiatives undertaken abroad in the history of the company.

To be more specific, the company is building two new combined-cycle power plants (Baja California III and Dulces Nombres V), three cogeneration plants (Ramos Arizpe, San Juan del Río and Altamira) and the Pier 2 (Puebla state) and Dos Arbolitos (Oaxaca state) wind farms.

Iberdrola has been operating in Mexico for over 15 years. Since then, it has gone on increasing its investments and expanding its activities and consolidated its position as the leading private electricity producer in the country.

Its current installed capacity in Mexico is 5,000 MW in combined cycle power plants and 230 MW in wind farms, meaning it can serve some 20 million Mexican consumers. The company plans to invest up to US$5 billion in the country over the next five years.
