At the Guadalajara City Council today, Iberdrola and the Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation presented an agreement to promote women's sport, with which the company becomes the largest sponsor of women's volleyball in the country.

The provisions of the agreement were ratified by Carmen Cabrera, Iberdrola sponsorship officer, and Agustín Martín, chairman of the Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation (RFEVB). Iberdrola will support women's volleyball, particularly for fostering and promoting the Superliga, the Spanish beach volleyball championship and activities of the Spanish national volleyball team.

At the event held this afternoon at the Plenary Chamber of the Guadalajara City Council with Guadalajara mayor Antonio Román and the Director General of the National Sports Council (CSD), Jaime González, in attendance; Iberdrola further demonstrated its commitment to equal opportunities, the reconciliation of private and professional life, and the development of the professional careers of women by backing women's sport.

The presentation of this agreement comes about at the heels of the most relevant event in the city of Guadalajara, capital of Spain's Alcarria region and, for four days, the capital of Spanish volleyball while hosting the Spanish Volleyball Championship.

The tournament also had some historic flair this year with the return of the Iberdrola All-Star Game, which gave fans an opportunity to see the best players from the Women's Volleyball Superliga (SFV) play against each other. Held at the Multipurpose Palace in Guadalajara, the match was merely a canvas for showcasing the quality, passion and talent of the Women's Division of Honour.

Iberdrola, prime mover of the 'Mujer y deporte' (Women and Sport) programme

This agreement for women's football in Spain joins another recent agreement through which the company became the primary sponsor of the 'Universo Mujer' (Women's Universe) programme run by the Higher Sports Council (CSD). In doing so, Iberdrola is the first company to undertake a global commitment to foster the participation of women in all areas of sport.

Under the agreement with the CSD, the company supports various sports federations, including gymnastics, swimming, football, triathlon, badminton, canoeing, rugby, handball and now volleyball, while leaving the door open for possible additions in the future. These sports were chosen because of their extraordinary achievements, high levels of participation, existence of grassroots programmes promoting sport, and other social projects.

Moreover, starting in March, the CSD and Iberdrola will be undertaking their 'Tour Mujer, energía y deporte' (Women, Energy and Sport Tour), an organised tour visiting several provincial capitals (including Palma de Mallorca, Bilbao, Valladolid and Madrid) to promote women's sport. An open space will be set up in each city for one weekend for hosting sport and leisure activities.

Iberdrola is also one of the main sponsors of the Spanish Paralympic Team and the Paralympic Sailing Team, has been part of the Paralympic Target Sport Support Plan (ADOP Plan) since its creation in 2005, and has supported the Spanish Paralympic Team at the Olympic Games of Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016. The group's contribution to Paralympic sport was recognised in 2013 when it received the Higher Sports Council's Olimpia Award.
