Imperial responded to a mechanical issue at one of its Cold Lake area in-situ well sites in northeast Alberta. The issue was detected by a monitoring alarm on Dec. 10. Effective procedures were in place resulting in an immediate response by operations personnel to secure the well. Approximately 20 litres of heavy oil was released off of the well site.

The company takes all incidents seriously. An investigation is underway and corrective actions continue to be developed and implemented.

The Alberta Energy Regulator and Cold Lake First Nation have been engaged. There are no impacts to communities and the release does not pose any risk to human health. Wildlife deterrents are being used at the site to keep animals and birds away. There are no reports of affected wildlife.

After more than a century, Imperial continues to be an industry leader in applying technology and innovation to responsibly develop Canada's energy resources. As Canada's largest petroleum refiner, a major producer of crude oil and natural gas, a key petrochemical producer and a leading fuels marketer from coast to coast, our company remains committed to high standards across all areas of our business.
