New development opportunities revealed at IDC 16

29 January 2016: Inmarsat is inviting application, hardware and software developers to join its growing community of technology companies at the second annual Inmarsat Developer Conference (IDC 16), being held in London (29 February - 1 March).

Three key areas of focus at the Conference will include development opportunities in 'sustainable fishing', 'digital transformation' and 'machine-to-machine'. These and eight other areas will form part of the two-day programme, which will feature hands-on technical workshops and expert sessions with representatives from each of Inmarsat's core markets; Maritime, Aviation, Enterprise, and Government.

The European Space Agency (ESA) will be present to provide details of how developers can apply for funding.

Long-standing commitment

Michele Franci, Chief Technology Officer, Inmarsat said: 'There are so many opportunities for developers - both new and existing - to collaborate with Inmarsat this year.

'Having recently announced our purchase of two Inmarsat-6 satellites which will combine both L-band and Ka-band services, we are demonstrating both a long-standing commitment to the customers we already serve as well as creating longevity for the development of new hardware, software or applications that can be used over our networks as we continue to evolve our services.

'We are harnessing a culture of innovation by opening up our platforms to developers to encourage new ideas that will change the way satellite communications are implemented on land, at sea and in the air.'

Development opportunities

  • Sustainable fishing: With a global drive towards conservation and marine sustainability, the fishing industry faces increasing pressure and stronger regulation. Using Inmarsat's robust and reliable satellite communications network, there is an opportunity for developers to design new smart applications to meet the commercial, regulatory and personal welfare requirements of fishermen and fishing fleets.
  • Digital transformation: Connectivity is the foundation for efficiency while utilising cloud, mobile solutions, big data and analytics can improve operations, return on investment and provide a competitive edge. For both Government and Aviation, Inmarsat will be discussing the opportunities for digital transformation with developers.
  • Machine-to-machine (M2M): The Internet of Things (IoT) has rapidly evolved and today both mobile and fixed assets are requiring one and two-way connectivity between themselves and other assets. Reliable satellite networks are sometimes the only solution, but managing and integrating these with terrestrial networks is an opportunity which developers are invited to explore with Inmarsat.

The Inmarsat Developer Conference is taking place 29 February - 1 March 2016 at the Park Plaza Hotel, London, UK.
