Michigan Gas Utilities Proposes New Natural Gas Rates for 2016 Monroe, MI - Michigan Gas Utilities (MGU), a subsidiary of Integrys Energy Group (NYSE: TEG), has filed a request for new natural gas distribution rates with the Michigan Public Service Commission. If granted, the request will result in an overall rate increase of 4.75% and could become effective as early as January 1, 2016. MGU last implemented new distribution rates on January 1, 2014. Since 2008, its rates have increased an average of only 1.1% annually - less than ordinary inflation. MGU requests the increase to offset the cost of upgrades to its transmission and distribution systems, increased staffing to address customer growth and regulatory compliance, gas main maintenance, and general inflation. The company has been modernizing its gas pipelines to improve safety and reliability. "We remain committed to safe, reliable and affordable gas service for our customers," said Ron Herr, MGU Vice President and General Manager."This rate adjustment will allow us to continue our efforts to modernize portions of our system that are aging." If approved, typical MGU residential customers using 860 CCF annually will see their natural gas bills increase approximately $4.15 per month. Also included in the request, MGU proposes to collect more of its fixed costs in the fixed charge, asking for a $5/month increase to $17. If approved, there will be a corresponding decrease in other distribution charges so that typical residential customers are not affected by the method of collecting costs. The overall increase will stay at $4.15, if approved. MGU currently has one of the lowest distribution charges of natural gas companies in the state.
