• Through the 'Asorpar' project in the Bajo Cauca Antioquia, ISA again offset 100% of its emissions of greenhouse gases. Its subsidiary INTERCOLOMBIA is carbon neutral for the first time.
  • About 75 tree species have arrived with the project, which seeks to restore areas devastated by illicit crops and mining, recovering the habitat of endangered species such as the jaguar and the spider monkey.
  • ISA, as a pioneer in the Voluntary Carbon Market, bought 4,821 tons of CO2 in 2016.

In its voluntary contribution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), ISA bought 4,821 tons of CO2 equivalent in the Voluntary Carbon Market, trading platform operated by the Colombia Mercantile Exchange that allows companies to acquire carbon credits to offset greenhouse gas emissions.

Through this mechanism, ISA once again offset 100% of its emissions associated with its administrative activities and the operation and maintenance of its Energy Transport assets through its subsidiary INTERCOLOMBIA. Both companies were ratified by South Pole Group as climate neutral.

With the purchase ofbonds that financed the Asorpar project, the area of Caceres, Low Antioquian Cauca, has been reforested with more than 20 native tree species, which have encouraged the arrival of about 75 more, and has contributed to habitat recovery for endangered animals such as jaguars, spider monkeys, anteaters, sloths, and armadillos, among other mammals.

'Asorpar' is the first reforestation project in Latin America to be certified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards (CCBS).

The initiative has helped restore environmental services in the area and has generated 150 jobs, creating sustainable alternatives for a region that depended on illegal activities in order to survive.

ISA and its companies in Colombia have been developing a strategy for managing climate change for four years, including actions on how to measure and offset their GHG emissions by purchasing carbon credits. To date, a total of 19,888 tons of CO2 have been offset in forestry projects and land use, which also contribute to biodiversity conservation and local development.
