“Iron Mountain is built on trust,” said William L. Meaney, president and chief executive officer of Iron Mountain. “Our customers trust us to protect and manage their critical information and other valuable assets as if they were our own. We take this responsibility very seriously and believe our reputation for trust must also extend to the commitments we make to our team and our communities. This report provides an update on how we’re serving our people, our communities and our planet with the highest level of integrity and trust.”

In 2014, Iron Mountain expanded its reporting capabilities to include Western Europe, covering data for its facilities in 10 countries, representing 85 percent of its revenue, 51 percent of its workforce, and 83 percent of its total real estate square footage. In doing so, Iron Mountain enhanced its ability to identify those places where its corporate responsibility efforts had demonstrable impact, while also gaining greater insight into opportunities to extend its program to further its global commitment.

Iron Mountain’s 2014 Corporate Responsibility Report cites specific examples of how Iron Mountain has acted on its commitments during that calendar year, including:

  • Climate impact – Increased installation of solar panels on facilities in North America to a total of 2 MW, producing enough electricity to power 250 homes for a year.
  • Green Building – Achieved LEED-Gold Certification for its corporate headquarters in Boston (Mass.) and its Northborough (Mass.) data center.
  • Employee Volunteerism & Community Engagement – Employees logged more than 56,000 hours in volunteer service in their communities in 2014, reflecting the same passion for service that they bring to our customers every day.
  • Inclusion & Diversity – Documented equal pay for women in North America and the United Kingdom, and increased hiring of U.S. veterans. Additionally, Iron Mountain started a training program for senior leaders and people managers on eliminating unconscious bias and the strategic role that inclusiveness can play in Iron Mountain’s success.
  • Charitable Giving – Through its Living Legacy Initiative corporate giving program, Iron Mountain provided over financial grants, in-kind services and information expertise to non-profit organizations that share the company’s commitment to cultural and historical preservation. Included among these are partnerships with CyArk, the GRAMMY Foundation, the New England Museum Association and the “Dear Boston” exhibit, and The Papers of Abraham Lincoln.

In addition, the 2014 report lays out Iron Mountain’s sustainability and responsibility goals for 2015, building upon five key areas of focus, with more detail on each in the report. These areas include:

  • Increased Stakeholder Engagement – Ongoing dialogue with employees, customers, stockholders and community partners enabled Iron Mountain to prioritize the economic, environmental and social issues most important to these stakeholders. For 2015, the Company will seek to develop a process for setting goals to integrate these priorities into its business and operational planning in measurable ways.
  • Expanded, Fully Global Reporting – While Iron Mountain widened its scope for reporting, it has not yet been able to provide a full global view into its program. In 2015, the Company will look to include additional regional data to its reporting for employee, community and environmental performance.
  • Environmental Performance – Due in large part to higher-than-expected use of natural gas during an exceptionally cold U.S. winter, greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) remained flat, causing Iron Mountain to miss its goal for reducing emissions by five percent. To better track our energy usage, two new environmental performance goals for 2015 have been added (in addition to GHG emissions reporting): reducing facility energy use and increasing the use of renewable energy.
  • Workplace Safety – Building upon its 2014 investments in safety, including the creation of a board-level committee on Risk & Safety and the appointment of a global head of safety, Iron Mountain intends to set more consistent, enterprise-wide goals for measuring and reporting on workplace safety around the world.
  • Growing Community Engagement – Reinforcing its commitment to trust as a guiding principle, Iron Mountain plans to increase the amount of employee volunteer hours to 60,000 worldwide and increase the value of the contributions it provides to its non-profit partnerships.

“Our employees are passionate about building a great workplace and making a difference in our communities,” said Ty Ondatje, Iron Mountain’s senior vice president of Corporate Responsibility and Chief Diversity Officer. “The ethical, social and operational commitments we make echo that passion, and are the core of our Taking CARE platform. This report offers us the opportunity to report on those commitments, demonstrating the progress we’ve made as well as the work we have left to do in continuing to live these out every day in our business all over the world.”

Iron Mountain’s Corporate Sustainability Report follows the latest revision (G4) of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Reporting Guidelines, a widely used standard that provides a framework for reporting and tracking progress.
