Iron Mountain Incorporated®, the global leader in storage and information management services, today announced it has achieved the Privacy+ certification sponsored by Professional Records & Information Services Management (PRISM) International, a nonprofit trade association for the commercial information management industry. With this certification, Iron Mountain is making a public commitment to protect the privacy of information – physical and electronic – that they store and manage for its customers.

The Privacy+ certification is owned and administered by PRISM International and applicable to participating companies’ physical storage and handling of hard-copy records and off-line removable computer media. In completing this certification, Iron Mountain joins a group of companies in the records and information management industry in publicly demonstrating their commitment to ensuring the privacy of information in their custody; additionally, they pledge to help the industry by:

  • Sharing resources and best practices to help other companies reducing risks in their businesses;
  • Reducing the number of privacy breach incidents caused by members of the industry to both preserve the industry’s reputation and trusted status and reduce the likelihood and severity of government-imposed legislation on our industry.

“With Iron Mountain completing Privacy+ certification, there is yet more evidence that Privacy+ is an essential criterion for customers searching for a reliable partner to manage their important information, data and documents,” said Dave Bergeson PhD, CAE, executive director of PRISM. “We are proud to have Iron Mountain join the ranks of Privacy+ certified companies.”

Iron Mountain also was a leader in the development of Privacy+, working alongside other PRISM International member organizations create a meaningful program that addressed all aspects of information storage and protection. Iron Mountain also solicited the input of its customers, partners, thought leaders and other information management providers to ensure it was compliant with current industry, national and international standards for protecting private information.

“Protecting private, personally identifiable information is one of the top priorities for the records and information management industry,” said Mike Holland, director of Industry Relations for Iron Mountain. “This type of information is the most vulnerable and valuable to ‘bad guys’ and at the heart of every breach, whether it be physical or electronic. Achieving this certification not only provides reassurance that we are committed to protecting this information, but also challenges us as an organization to maintain that commitment. We take the protection of this information very seriously, and want our customers, partners and industry peers to both understand, and embrace, our commitment.”
