LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. - July 2, 2015 - Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI), a world-leading technology and services company dedicated to the resourceful use of energy and water, announced today that it has received Wi-SUN PHY product certification for Itron Riva's Adaptive Communications Technology (ACT). Building on the power of Cisco's IPv6 network and IOx fog computing platform, Itron Riva is the first-of-its-kind distributed intelligence platform that supports adaptive communications to dynamically determine the best network path, including radio frequency (RF) or power line carrier (PLC) to optimize communications.
As a Wi-SUN certified technology, Itron Riva's ACT meets industry-agreed standards for compliance and interoperability of wireless smart utility network devices using the IEEE802.15.4g physical layer standard. As a part of the certification process, the technology underwent rigorous compliance testing by a Wi-SUN independent Authorized Test Laboratory as well as verification of interoperability with other Wi-SUN certified devices.
Itron and Cisco are both members of the Wi-SUN Alliance, helping advance seamless connectivity. The two companies are also working together on joint deployments in Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America and North America.
"Wi-SUN certification marks an important milestone for our Adaptive Communications Technology, validating its compliance with key industry standards," said Simon Pontin, Itron's chief technology officer. "With Itron Riva distributed intelligence platform, including adaptive communications, Itron is accelerating information sharing and decision processes to empower smarter utilities, smarter cities and the Internet of Things."
With Adaptive Communications Technology, utilities can deploy a single network solution that incorporates three communications technologies - RF mesh, PLC and Wi-Fi - working in concert on the same chip set. The technology automatically utilizes the most reliable and fastest communication path and most efficient modulation scheme based on its location, network operating conditions and the nature of the application or data. Adaptive communications, delivers a new standard for network performance, reliability and cost of ownership.
Itron, Inc. provides energy, water, smart city, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and intelligent infrastructure services. The Company operates in three segments.
