  • Work named number one cause of stress in World Mental Health Day survey
  • Reducing workplace stress can benefit employees and their employers

A survey carried by JLT Employee Benefits has found that just over half of the people that took part in the poll believe that work is the biggest cause of stress in their lives.

The survey was carried out to mark World Mental Health Day on 10 October, which looks to raise awareness and encourage people to speak openly about mental health issues.

Of the 120 people that took part in the survey, 55 per cent said they found work the most stressful, and this was followed by money at 19 per cent, and family at 13 per cent. Just 10 per cent of people said that relationships were their biggest cause of stress, with health coming last at just three per cent.

Adrian Humphreys, Group Risk and Health Director for JLT Employee Benefits, said: 'The survey results illustrate the huge part that work plays in our lives, and the resulting risk of exposure to work-related stress caused by issues such as ever-increasing workloads and long hours. Not only can this have a detrimental effect on their work-life balance, but left unchecked it can also result in reduced productivity and increased levels of absence and more worryingly, cause serious long-term health problems for employees.

'Employers need to address stress by identifying and managing the key contributing factors within the workplace, as well as giving employees the tools to identify and obtain support for any mental health issues they are experiencing. We know that many employers want to tackle this problem but aren't sure where to start - indeed we've recently seen a rise in businesses coming to us for advice on how to deal with this issue.

'Reducing workplace stress is not only good for employees, but employers will see the benefit too as productivity increases and staff turnover is reduced. It really is a win-win situation for everyone.'
