Johnson Controls : 40 millionth automotive battery rolls off the assembly line at the Johnson Controls plant in Zwickau

On May 23, 2017, Johnson Controls reached a production milestone: The company's plant in Zwickau, Germany, manufactured its 40 millionth Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery. There is growing demand globally for AGM batteries, a core component of Start-Stop vehicles. Projections show that by 2020, 82 percent of all new vehicles produced in the EU28 will be equipped with Start-Stop technology. This is driving Johnson Controls, the world's largest manufacturer of automotive batteries, to steadily expand production at its facilities globally.

'40 million batteries produced is a milestone we can be very proud of. Just visualize if all the batteries produced here in Zwickau were placed one after the other, they would stretch 7,000 kilometers - from Germany to America. That is really impressive,' said plant manager Matthias Horn, Johnson Controls Power Solutions. This success will spur us on further and we are already looking forward to setting about producing the next 40 million batteries in our plant and by this helping to make cars even more ecofriendly.'

AGM batteries, such as those produced in Zwickau, offer more than three times the cycling capability of conventional batteries and are at the heart of Start-Stop vehicle systems which offer about 5 percent fuel savings for drivers. When the engine is switched off, the vehicle's battery is used to power things like the radio, lights and heating system- instead of a gas-powered engine. At the same time, the battery provides the power to restart the engine in a fraction of a second. This means the battery is subject to frequent charging and discharging and must have greater cycling capability to meet these requirements.

To help meet demand for AGM batteries, Johnson Controls plans to triple its production capacity from 17 million in 2016 to 50 million in 2020.
