Bernburg Gas Storage Site

In connection with the shutting down and long-term securing of a VNG Gasspeicher GmbH (VGS) gas cavern, K+S KALI GmbH has started to transport saturated saline water from potash production at the Werra plant to Bernburg. The appropriate permit has now been issued by theSaxony-Anhalt State Authority for Geology and Mining.

The capacity of the Gnetsch brine field cavern slated for flooding is about 210,000 cubic meters. One of the advantages of flooding with saline solutions is that there is no need for water to be drawn from the Saale river. In addition, it creates an additional means for the Werra plant to re-utilize saline water from potash production. The flooding of the cavern is to be completed by August 2017.

The saline water will be shipped in tank containers by rail from the Werra plant (Hersfeld-Rotenburg district, Hesse) to the container terminal in Magdeburg. There, the containers will be loaded onto trucks and driven to the Gnetsch brine field at Bernburg, where the saline solutions are to be fed into the existing pipeline system. The shipments will take place on working days and steps will be taken to ensure that they cause as little adverse effects as possible for the population. K+S has informed the municipalities affected about the route to be taken by the truck shipments.
