On January 13, 2017, a storage chamber at the Herfa-Neurode underground waste disposal plant in which a smoldering fire had broken out was opened by the Hattorf-Wintershall mine rescue team accompanied by representatives of the Kassel Regional Council as well as of the Central Office of the Mine Rescue Service in Clausthal-Zellerfeld. It was found that the fire had extinguished itself.

The Kassel Regional Council, as the agency with oversight responsibility, confirmed that an appropriate fire protection concept had been deployed and suitable measures implemented. The fire did not pose a danger to people or the environment at any time.

Investigations into the causes of the fire is being conducted in consultation with the Kassel Regional Council and is still underway.
